TikTok Shop’s global gross merchandise value crossed US$50.3 billion in the first half of 2026, up 92% year on year, and the United States alone reached US$11.8 billion on 103% growth. That is the number that ends the argument about whether social commerce is a side channel. A platform running at this pace is not a test budget line, it is a distribution channel with the volume to reprice a category.

The figures come from TikTok Shop in the U.S. H1 2026, the fourth joint report from Momentum Works and the data platform Tabcut, published on 6 August. Momentum Works puts the platform on track to comfortably surpass US$100 billion for the full year. Five years ago TikTok Shop’s annual GMV was under US$1 billion.

The finding underneath the headline is the one that should change what you do this quarter. In the United States, TikTok Shop’s largest market, live selling now closes 8.2% of attributed GMV. The marketplace tab closes 51.4%. The channel every onboarding deck sells as a live-shopping channel is settling into something that looks a great deal more like a conventional marketplace.

On the full-year outlook, there are two numbers in circulation from the same house. The conservative framing is that the platform will comfortably surpass US$100 billion. A more aggressive projection from Momentum Works puts 2026 GMV topping out at US$123.5 billion. We use the floor, and anyone quoting this dataset should do the same: the second half carries the peak-event skew that makes the higher number possible, and on Black Friday weekend last year TikTok Shop recorded US$500 million of US sales in a single weekend. The 100 billion figure survives a bad Q4. The 123.5 billion figure needs a good one.

The sale no longer closes where the story says it does

Here is the split in full. In the United States, the Shop tab, which is the marketplace surface, rose from 36% to 51.4% of attributed GMV. Video accounts for 40.4%. Live has narrowed to 8.2%.

Read that again, because it inverts the pitch most sellers were given when they joined. Live shopping, the thing every onboarding deck leads with, now accounts for 8.2% of GMV in TikTok Shop’s biggest market. Video still drives discovery and it is doing the heavy lifting there. But the transaction increasingly happens on a marketplace surface where a shopper searches, compares tiles, reads reviews and checks price, which is to say it happens under Amazon-style rules.

That has a direct consequence for how you staff and budget. If half your GMV closes on a marketplace tab, the disciplines that decide your outcome are listing quality, review volume, price position and in-stock rate. Those are catalogue disciplines. A creator-first team with no marketplace operator will keep generating views that convert on a surface it does not manage.

One boundary worth keeping straight, because it is the sort of number that travels badly: the 36 to 51.4 split, the 40.4% and the 8.2% are all United States figures. The report does not publish the same breakdown for any other market.

If half your GMV closes on a marketplace tab, you need to know what actually sells on it. All three track TikTok Shop product, creator and shop-level sales data by market, so you can see the categories and price points that are moving before you commit a catalogue to them.

Easier to enter, harder to win

Two findings in the report describe the same pressure. Average prices fell in 21 of 27 categories. And 8 of the top 10 influencers by GMV were new to the ranking. Momentum Works reads that as a market becoming easier to enter and harder to win, and adds that the growing volume of AI-generated video and livestreaming will likely push competition further.

Scale is arriving with it. More than 5,700 stores crossed US$1 million in GMV, an eightfold increase year on year, and 506 of those grossed above US$10 million. The channel is producing real businesses at volume while compressing the price at which they compete. That is not a contradiction, it is what a maturing marketplace looks like.

After the United States, the next five markets in the TikTok Shop GMV ranking are all in Southeast Asia: Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines. The report also notes that tactics driving conversion in China and Southeast Asia have frequently failed in the US, and that top US creators built a different set of live tactics instead. There is no single global playbook to import.

What the report does not cover

The report is a United States report. A sister report on Brazil is due next week. There is no European edition, and the release announcing a hundred-billion-dollar trajectory does not contain a single European or UK figure. That is worth stating because it decides how far the numbers above can travel.

Nor does TikTok fill the gap. On 28 May the company announced that from 15 June TikTok Shop would be available in Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands and Poland, joining France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain and the UK. In the same announcement TikTok said that over 100,000 European businesses have joined TikTok Shop across France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Ireland since launching in the EU in late 2024 and early 2025, and that this seller community “has driven triple-digit growth in daily Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) between August 2025 and February 2026 across these markets”.

A growth rate with no base is not a market size. Triple-digit growth on an undisclosed number tells a seller nothing about whether their category is worth building a team around. Contrast that with the precision available for the US: 11.8 billion dollars, 103%, 51.4% closing on Shop, 27 categories priced.

TikTok is capable of publishing European numbers when they serve a different purpose. In January it released research it commissioned from Public First putting the app’s direct and indirect economic impact in the European Union at €31 billion, broken down to €7.2 billion for Germany and €5.2 billion for France. So the country-level detail exists when the audience is Brussels. That is a public-affairs number. It is not GMV, and no amount of reading it will tell you what beauty sold on TikTok Shop Germany last quarter.

Triple-digit growth on an undisclosed base is not a forecast you can hire against. Pull your own category’s top shops, products and creator GMV per market, then compare what each tool actually covers before you pay for a year.

What a European seller should take from a US dataset

This next part is our argument, not the report’s. Momentum Works did not write about Europe.

We think the US dataset is the best available forward view of the European channel, with a lag. The sequence visible in the American numbers is consistent: rapid GMV growth, then a rush of sellers, then price compression across most categories, then the closing surface shifting from live to marketplace. Europe entered the channel in late 2024 and 2025 and added four markets in June 2026. It is earlier in that sequence, not exempt from it. Three practical implications follow.

  • Build the marketplace muscle now. The Shop tab crossing half of US GMV happened inside twelve months. Treat your TikTok Shop listings as marketplace listings today, with the titles, images, reviews and stock discipline that implies.
  • Price the compression in before it arrives. Average prices fell in 21 of 27 US categories while GMV doubled. If your margin only works at today’s price, you are underwriting a launch, not a business.
  • Size your own market bottom-up. With no published European GMV, the number has to be assembled from category-level tooling, your own sales and creator-level data per market. TikTok’s ‘Sell Across Europe’ feature makes cross-border listing easy, which also makes it easy to spread a thin budget across ten markets without knowing which one is worth it.

A channel that will clear one hundred billion dollars this year is no longer optional for a consumer brand, and the burden of proof has flipped: it is now on the seller who is not there to explain why. The harder question is not whether to be on TikTok Shop but which surface to staff for, and on the only market where the split has been published, the answer has moved away from the camera and towards the catalogue.
